Ortlieb Ultimate Six Free — The Handlebar Bag Without PVC

The Ortlieb Ultimate Six Free is the PVC-free version of the Ultimate Six handlebar bag — a 5 or 6.5-litre waterproof bag for the handlebar that delivers the same tarpaulin performance and touring credentials as the Classic, built entirely without PVC. In Lagoon/Black.

Where the Ultimate Classic uses a roll-top closure, the Ultimate Six Free takes a different approach: a magnetic snap flap with a transparent map compartment on top, operable with one hand, that keeps the bag open to the ride without sacrificing waterproofing. The body is form-stable — it holds its shape fully loaded or empty — and the PVC-free polyurethane-laminated polyester achieves the same waterproof tarpaulin barrier that Ortlieb is known for, without PVC in the material composition.

IP54 Waterproofing and PVC-Free Construction

The Ultimate Six Free is rated IP54 — dust-protected and protected against water splashes from all directions. The PVC-free material is a polyurethane-laminated polyester (PD62/PS60) — a formulation that eliminates PVC from the fabric while maintaining the waterproof tarpaulin performance and durability that define Ortlieb's touring range. The magnetic flap closure seals the top of the bag with a single-hand snap; the transparent map case above it is independently waterproof.

Magnetic Flap and Transparent Map Case

The magnetic snap closure is one of the most practical features on the Ultimate Six Free. A single press opens or closes the flap from either side, even with gloves. The transparent flap compartment — 22 × 10 cm on the 6.5L, 21 × 12 cm on the 5L — provides a dedicated, weatherproof window for a smartphone, GPS device or folded map. Ventilation slits in the flap prevent device overheating during sustained use. Touch functionality works through the transparent film on most smartphones.

Organisation

The main compartment is form-stable and opens wide for easy access. A zippered inner pocket with carabiner keeps keys, cards and small valuables organised and clipped in. A 3M Scotchlite reflective element on the front panel adds low-light visibility. The detachable shoulder strap transforms the bag into a shoulder bag once off the bike — useful at the café, at the trailhead or in town.

Handlebar Mounting

The Ultimate Six Free uses Ortlieb's standard handlebar mounting kits, sold separately. It is compatible with all four mounting sets — standard, with lock, E-Bike (for bikes with a centre display) and QR (for quick transfer between bikes) — as well as with existing Rixen & Kaul Klickfix mounts. L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel stocks the full range and can advise on the right kit for your setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Ultimate Six Free and the Ultimate Classic?
Both are IP54-rated handlebar bags sharing the same mounting system and general dimensions. The key differences are material and closure. The Classic uses PVC-coated polyester and a roll-top closure; the Free uses PVC-free PU-laminated polyester and a magnetic snap flap. The flap closure on the Free allows single-hand access and keeps the map case and bag accessible without rolling and unrolling, which many riders prefer for frequent access during a ride. The Free is the choice if PVC-free construction matters to you, or if you prefer the convenience of a magnetic flap over a roll-top.
Is the material really as waterproof as conventional Ortlieb tarpaulin?
Yes — the PVC-free PU-laminated polyester (PD62/PS60) achieves the same IP54 waterproof standard as the Classic's PVC-coated material. Ortlieb developed the Free range specifically to match the performance and durability of their conventional tarpaulin without PVC. The same welded seam construction applies; the only difference is the material composition of the fabric itself.
Which handlebar mounting kit do I need?
The right kit depends on your bike. The standard mounting set fits most handlebars. The lockable version adds security. The E-Bike mount provides extra clearance for centre-mounted displays. The QR mount allows tool-free transfer between bikes. The Ultimate Six Free is also compatible with existing Rixen & Kaul Klickfix mounts. L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel has the full range in stock and can advise on compatibility.
Can I use my smartphone through the map case?
Yes — touch functionality works through the transparent film on most smartphones without removing the device. Ventilation slits in the flap prevent the phone from overheating during extended navigation sessions. The map case measures 22 × 10 cm on the 6.5L and 21 × 12 cm on the 5L, fitting most modern smartphones including larger models.
Is the Ortlieb Ultimate Six Free repairable?
Yes. All Ortlieb products are manufactured in Germany to exacting repairability standards. Replacement shoulder straps, magnetic closures and mounting interface parts are available through Ortlieb or your local dealer. L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel can advise on repairs and spare parts for the Ultimate Six Free.
