Designed to derail!
No need to present this gear change system (invented by a Frenchman!!) which has proven itself for nearly a century.
Both light and reliable, this device now equips most of the cycles sold (from the simple city bike to that of the Tour de France).
Today three brands dominate the world market: Shimano (Japan), Campagnolo (Italy) and Sram (USA)
Keep in mind that these three brands are not friends. Not all components of your drivetrain are designed to work or work together. For example Sram controls with a Shimano rear derailleur or a Campagnolo cassette with a Shimano chain...
For simplicity, refer to your model. It is most often written on the rear derailleur or the controls if they have not been changed.
Clevis length
The next step is to determine the cage length, i.e. the length of the rear derailleur hanger.
There are three sizes: short, medium and long. So check the compatibility of your gear controls with a clevis that matches your transmission.
A long cage is generally installed on single chainrings and a short cage for triple chainring transmissions.
