Ortlieb Back-Roller 20L Zip-Pocket — the original, with a pocket you can actually reach
Since 1987 the Back-Roller has been the pannier other panniers are compared to: daily commutes, loaded touring, every kind of weather. The design has never needed reinventing, only refining. This is the latest refinement, and there are two of them.
The first is a waterproof zip pocket on the front face. It takes the things you want at a red light — phone, keys, a lock — without opening the main compartment, and it is the place the removable shoulder strap lives when you are riding. The second is the fabric.
TIDURA strong
TIDURA strong is Ortlieb's own PVC-free fabric, produced by GDS, a sister company based alongside Ortlieb in Heilsbronn. It replaces the coated tarpaulin that defined the bag for decades, with the same job to do and a cleaner material footprint.
What has not changed is how the bag is put together. The whole body is high-frequency welded rather than stitched: no seams, so no thread to soak up water and no needle holes to seal afterwards. Every welded joint is at least as strong as the fabric itself — and if the bag is ever punctured, the hole can be welded shut again by Ortlieb or an authorised dealer. That is a repair most waterproof bags simply cannot offer.
Waterproofing, precisely
The main compartment is rated IP64 — dust-tight and protected against splashing water from every direction, which covers sustained rain and road spray. Unusually, the exterior zip pocket carries the same IP64 rating, so what you keep there stays as dry as what is inside. Roll the closure down three to four times and tension it to reach the rating. It is not a submersion rating.
Quick-Lock2.2
QL2.2 is the current generation of Ortlieb's mounting system and it raises the payload to 12.5 kg per bag. The hooks adjust tool-free across tube diameters from 8 to 16 mm with no reducer inserts to fit or lose, and every contact point carries anti-scratch protection for your rack tube. Self-locking as you drop it on, one-handed as you lift it off. QL2.1 and QL2.2 cover the same 8 to 16 mm range, so if you already run older Ortlieb panniers on your rack, this one will fit it too.
Which Back-Roller is which
The range can be confusing, so plainly: Plus means the extra exterior pocket and a textile-look fabric. Free is PVC-free with the classic tarpaulin hand. XL gives 35 litres per bag for long tours. Core is the entry model — waterproof and tough, but without shoulder strap or inner pocket. This 20L Zip-Pocket sits where most riders land: everyday volume, the pocket you actually use, and the new PVC-free fabric.

Frequently asked questions
Is it sold as a pair?
No, one bag with its shoulder strap. The body is symmetrical, so order two of the same reference if you want a matched set.
Is the zip pocket really waterproof?
Yes, and that is the unusual part. On most panniers an outer pocket sits outside the sealed volume and is good for a spare tube and nothing else. Here it carries the same IP64 rating as the main compartment, so a phone or a wallet is fine in it.
Back-Roller or Sport-Roller?
The Back-Roller is built for the rear rack and gives 20 litres per bag. The Sport-Roller is more compact at 14.5 litres and is the front bag for a lowrider, or the better choice on a smaller frame. And if you prefer a flap lid to a roll closure — more stable loading, with room to strap something on top — that is the Bike-Packer.
What is TIDURA strong?
Ortlieb's own PVC-free fabric, made by its sister company GDS in Heilsbronn. It replaces the coated tarpaulin used on previous generations. Same waterproofing, same welded construction, without PVC.
How much can I load into it?
Up to 12.5 kg per bag, the Quick-Lock2.2 rating. Your rack has its own maximum load and it is often the lower of the two — check the figure printed on it before loading.
Will it fit my rack?
QL2.2 adjusts tool-free from 8 to 16 mm with nothing to add or remove, the same range as QL2.1. For 18 or 20 mm tubes, common on e-bike racks, you need the QL2.1 hooks E211 or E193, sold separately.
What happens if I tear it?
It gets welded. Because nothing on this bag is stitched or glued, a puncture or a tear can be welded closed by Ortlieb's service in Heilsbronn or by an authorised dealer, and the repair is as strong as the surrounding fabric. Straps, buckles, hooks and rails are all replaceable too, and spare parts stay available for at least ten years after a model leaves the collection. Bring it to our workshop at L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel and we will sort it.
Where is it made?
Heilsbronn, Germany. Every step from cutting the fabric to final inspection happens in Ortlieb's own workshops.
