Ortlieb Vario Urban QL2.2 20L — one bag for the ride and the room you walk into
Most commuters own two bags: one that clips to the rack, and one that survives the walk from the bike park to the desk. The Vario Urban is the argument for owning neither. A reversible front flap hides whichever side you are not using, so the bag reads as a clean urban backpack on your shoulders and as a proper pannier on your rack, with nothing dangling in between.
Where earlier Vario models wore Ortlieb's familiar glossy finish, the Urban is cut from a PU-coated Cordura blend with a matte, textile hand. It looks like something you would carry into a meeting. It is still, underneath, entirely waterproof.
Switching sides
The changeover takes one movement. Fold the flap one way and the Quick-Lock2.2 rail and hooks are exposed, ready for the rack. Fold it the other and the padded back panel, ergonomic shoulder straps and chest strap come forward while the mounting hardware disappears. The flap carries its own zipped pocket, so the thing covering the hardware is also doing useful work.
Quick-Lock2.2
QL2.2 is the evolution of Ortlieb's long-serving QL2.1. The hooks adjust tool-free across tube diameters from 10 to 16 mm, with supplied inserts stepping down to 12, 10 and 8 mm. The lower hook rail carries scratch protection so the rack tube survives years of mounting and unmounting. A second buckle above the rail releases the locking hook under light loads, which makes one-handed removal genuinely one-handed.
Inside
A single generous main compartment opens through the roll-top closure — wider than the previous generation, which matters when you are loading a laptop and a lunch at the same time. An inner organiser pocket holds the small things, and a padded sleeve takes a notebook up to roughly 15.6 inches. The exterior zipped pocket handles keys, cards and a phone without opening the roll.
Waterproofing, precisely
The Vario Urban is rated IP64: dust-tight and protected against splashing water from every direction. In practice that covers sustained rain and road spray. To reach the rating, roll the closure down three to four times and clip it under tension. The flap's outer pocket sits outside the sealed volume and is not waterproof — keep paper out of it.

Frequently asked questions
Will my laptop fit?
The padded sleeve measures 36 × 24.5 × 2.5 cm, which takes most 15.6-inch notebooks and every 13- and 14-inch machine comfortably. A 16-inch MacBook Pro measures 35.6 × 24.8 cm and fits, though without much margin around a bulky case.
Is it sold singly or as a pair?
Singly. Unlike most Ortlieb panniers, the Vario is a one-bag product — it has a carrying system on one side, so a matched pair makes no sense.
What does IP64 actually mean here?
Dust-tight, and protected against splashing water from all directions. Heavy rain and road spray will not reach the contents provided the roll-top is closed three to four times and tensioned. It is not rated for submersion.
Will it fit my rack?
QL2.2 adjusts tool-free to tubes between 10 and 16 mm, which covers the overwhelming majority of rear racks. Supplied reducer inserts handle 12, 10 and 8 mm. For 18 or 20 mm tubes you will need the QL2.1 hook sets (E211 or E193), sold separately.
Can it be repaired?
Yes. Ortlieb supplies hooks, rails, buckles and straps as individual spare parts, and the bag carries a five-year warranty. Our workshop at L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel can fit replacement hardware for you.
Where is it made?
Germany, at Ortlieb's own factory in Heilsbronn.
