Ortlieb Vario Plus QL2.2 26L — the hybrid, sized for people who carry everything
Six extra litres over the 20-litre Vario does not sound like much until you have tried to fit a laptop, a change of clothes and a helmet into a commuter bag at the same time. The Vario Plus is the version for longer days and heavier loads: the same one-movement conversion between pannier and backpack, in a body with room to spare.
The Plus in the name refers to the fabric. Where the Urban model reaches for a matte textile finish, the Plus is built from a PU-coated Cordura blend chosen for abrasion resistance above all — the material Ortlieb reaches for when a bag is expected to be thrown into train luggage racks and dragged through winter.
One movement, two bags
A reversible flap covers whichever side is not in use. Turned one way, the Quick-Lock2.2 rail and hooks face out, ready for the rack. Turned the other, the padded harness, ergonomic shoulder straps and chest strap come forward and the hardware vanishes. No straps flapping into the rear wheel, no hooks digging into your back. The flap carries an integrated zipped pocket, so it earns its place twice.
Quick-Lock2.2
QL2.2 builds on the QL2.1 system that has been on Ortlieb panniers for decades, with more tolerance for the variety of racks in the wild. Hooks adjust tool-free from 10 to 16 mm; supplied inserts step down to 12, 10 and 8 mm. The lower hook rail has scratch protection to spare your rack tube, and the lower hook rotates in 15-degree increments and adjusts for height, which is what makes the difference on awkward rack geometries.
Organisation
- Main compartment with roll-top closure, opening wide for bulky loads
- Padded laptop sleeve, 36 × 24.5 × 2.5 cm
- Inner organiser pocket for small items
- Zipped outer pocket for quick access — not inside the waterproof volume
- Integrated pocket in the reversible flap
- Carrying handle and chest strap
- Reflective design elements
Waterproofing, precisely
The Vario Plus is rated IP64: dust-tight, and protected against splashing water from all directions. Heavy rain, road spray and a wet train platform are all within its remit. The rating depends on technique — roll the closure down three to four times and tension it downward. The zipped outer pocket sits outside the sealed volume and will let water in.

Frequently asked questions
How much bigger is this than the 20-litre Vario?
Six litres, and the difference is mostly depth: 22 cm against 18 cm, with 2 cm more height. The footprint on the rack is nearly identical, so if a 20-litre Vario fits your bike, this will too.
Will my laptop fit?
The padded sleeve is 36 × 24.5 × 2.5 cm, which covers 15.6-inch notebooks and anything smaller. 16-inch machines fit but leave little room for a thick protective case.
Is it sold singly or in a pair?
Singly. The carrying system occupies one side of the bag, so the Vario is a single-bag product by design.
What does IP64 mean in practice?
Dust-tight and protected against splashing water from every direction. Your contents stay dry through sustained rain and spray, provided the roll-top is closed three to four times and tensioned. It is not a submersion rating.
Can it be locked to the rack?
Not the bag itself, but the QL2 Lock (F3913) fits the upper rail of the QL2.2 mounting and secures the bag to the rack. Ortlieb's anti-theft devices E124 and E125 are the other option. Both are available from us.
Can it be repaired?
Yes. Hooks, rails, buckles and straps are all available as spare parts, and the bag carries a five-year warranty. Our workshop at L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel can fit replacement hardware.
