Ortlieb Frame-Pack RC — The Waterproof Frame Bag Built for Bikepacking

The Ortlieb Frame-Pack RC is the roll-closure version of Ortlieb's bikepacking frame bag — a waterproof bag designed to fit inside the frame triangle and carry heavy kit centrally on the bike. Available in 4 and 6 litres. Tools, food, a pump, a first-aid kit: the things that are heaviest are best carried low and centred, and the Frame-Pack RC puts them exactly there.

The RC designation stands for Roll Closure — a slim waterproof roll-top sealed by three silicone rings rather than a conventional roll-and-clip system. This keeps the closure profile as narrow as possible, which matters when every centimetre of frame clearance counts. The large opening makes loading and packing easy even with bulky items, and the bag's PVC-free nylon construction is built to hold its shape and waterproofing through hard use.

IP64 Waterproofing

The Frame-Pack RC is rated IP64 — completely dustproof and protected against water jets from all directions. The slim roll closure sealed with three silicone rings and the PVC-free nylon fabric together create a waterproof barrier that holds through sustained rain, river crossings and the kind of conditions that bikepacking regularly delivers. Note: the Frame-Pack (Tizip zipper version) carries an IP67 rating for submersion protection; the RC's IP64 is fully adequate for all standard bikepacking use.

Slim Roll Closure With Silicone Rings

The closure system on the RC is deliberately compact. The slim roll-top profile reduces the bag's footprint inside the frame triangle, while the three silicone rings secure the rolled closure without adding bulk or requiring a separate buckle clip. The large opening allows the bag to be loaded flat — tent poles, cookware, sleeping bag compressors and similarly awkward items go in easily. Unlike a zipper closure, there are no moving parts to wear out or jam with trail debris.

Velcro Mounting System

The Frame-Pack RC attaches to the frame triangle with interchangeable, individually positionable Velcro® straps. The straps can be positioned anywhere along the bag's circumference to suit the specific geometry of your frame. They are compatible with tube diameters up to 48.8 mm, covering the vast majority of road, gravel, mountain and e-bike frames. The mounting system is suitable for carbon frames — the Velcro attachment distributes load without point pressure or abrasion risk to the frame surface.

4L or 6L?

The 4L (H 30 cm × W 16 cm × D 9 cm, 200 g) is the compact option, suited to most frame sizes including smaller road and gravel frames where triangle space is limited. The 6L (H 36 cm × W 19 cm × D 11 cm, 250 g) offers meaningfully more volume for longer tours and larger frames — enough space for a day's food, tools, a compact stove and gas, or layering pieces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Frame-Pack RC and the Frame-Pack (Tizip)?
The two bags share the same dimensions and mounting system but differ in their closure. The Frame-Pack uses a waterproof Tizip zipper — rated IP67 (submersible to 1 m for 30 min), allowing very quick single-handed access, ideal if you need to reach tools or food frequently while riding. The Frame-Pack RC uses a slim roll closure sealed with silicone rings — rated IP64, with a larger opening that makes loading bulkier items easier. Both are fully waterproof for standard bikepacking use; the choice comes down to whether you prioritise quick access (Tizip) or easy loading and lighter closure (RC).
Is the Frame-Pack RC compatible with my bike?
The RC's Velcro straps are compatible with tube diameters up to 48.8 mm and can be individually positioned along the bag's circumference to adapt to a wide range of frame geometries. It is suitable for carbon frames. Ortlieb provides a printable fitting template on their website for both the 4L and 6L sizes if you want to check fit before purchasing. L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel can also advise on frame compatibility.
What is the difference between 4L and 6L?
The 4L (H30×W16×D9 cm, 200 g) suits most frame sizes including compact road and gravel frames. The 6L (H36×W19×D11 cm, 250 g) offers significantly more volume for larger frames and longer tours — enough for tools, a day's food, a stove and gas, and a spare layer. Both share identical waterproofing, closure and mounting systems.
What should I carry in the Frame-Pack RC?
The Frame-Pack RC is best suited to heavy, dense items that benefit from central, low placement on the bike: multi-tools, spare tubes, a mini pump, a compact stove and gas canister, food for the day, a first-aid kit, or a battery pack. Carrying weight low and centred in the frame triangle keeps the bike's handling neutral. Lighter, bulkier items are better carried in a handlebar or seat pack.
Is the Ortlieb Frame-Pack RC repairable?
Yes. All Ortlieb products are manufactured in Germany to exacting repairability standards. The silicone closure rings and Velcro straps are replaceable, and the PVC-free nylon can be repaired if damaged. Ortlieb keeps spare parts available for at least ten years after a model is discontinued. L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel can advise on repairs and spare parts for the Frame-Pack RC.
