Ortlieb Duffle RG 60L — the two-week bag that you pull instead of carry

Sixty litres is where carrying stops being pleasant and wheels start earning their weight. The Duffle RG 60 is built for the trip where the kit list runs long: two weeks of clothes, or a family's worth of gear for a weekend, moved across terminals, station platforms and the unpaved stretch between a car park and a lodge.

It is waterproof in the way Ortlieb means the word. A sealed polyester body and a 10 mm TIZIP Masterseal, the heavy-duty version of the drysuit zip, keep the contents dry through rain, spray and a wet deck. That is not a claim most wheeled luggage can make.

Where it goes that roller cases do not

Large wheels, an aluminium frame and an impact-proof underside mean it tracks over gravel, cobbles and grass rather than tipping over on the first kerb. It stands up on its own whether full or empty. And when the ground gives up entirely, the shoulder straps turn it into a backpack — a genuine one, not a token pair of webbing loops.

Three ways to move it

  • Pulled on the telescopic aluminium handle
  • Carried one-handed by the grab handle
  • Worn on the back with the removable shoulder straps

Waterproofing

Ortlieb publishes no IP figure for the RG range, unlike its roll-top bags at IP64 and its TIZIP Duffles at IP67. We will not quote one it has not stated. What the sealed polyester and the TIZIP Masterseal deliver in practice is contents that stay dry in sustained rain and spray.

Frequently asked questions

34, 60 or 85 litres?
34 L is the cabin size and fits most airline hand-luggage allowances. 60 L is the two-week bag, or a family weekend, and still moves easily on one hand. 85 L is expedition volume and belongs in the hold. All three share the frame, the wheels and the zip.

Is it cabin-sized?
No. At 68 × 40 × 27.2 cm this is hold luggage. The 34 L is the one built to clear cabin limits.

Why 3.25 kg empty?
Wheels, aluminium frame and a reinforced base. That is what lets you pull it over broken ground rather than lift it. If you want volume without the weight, the Duffle 60 L without wheels is 1,180 g and the Duffle Lite 60 L is 850 g.

Does it have an IP rating?
Not one Ortlieb publishes for the RG. Our roll-top bags are rated IP64 and our TIZIP Duffles IP67; for this model the manufacturer states waterproof construction without an IP figure, so neither do we.

Does the zip need maintenance?
Yes, like every TIZIP. Pull it steadily rather than yanking, and lubricate it once or twice a year. We stock the Ortlieb lubricant stick (E134).

Can it be repaired?
Yes. Ortlieb supplies replacement wheels, straps and zip lubricant, and the bag carries a five-year warranty. Our workshop at L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel handles repairs and orders parts.
