Ortlieb Duffle 60L — the size most people end up buying

Sixty litres is the point where a travel bag stops being a weekend bag and starts being the only bag. Two people for a long weekend, one person for a month, or a single set of expedition kit with room for the things you did not plan for. It is the middle size in the Duffle range and, for most trips, the one that turns out to be right.

The promise underneath is the same across the range and it is unusual: IP67. Dust-tight, and sealed against immersion in a metre of water for half an hour. Not water-resistant, not weatherproof — sealed. Whatever the boat, the airport carousel or the back of the pickup does to it, the contents stay dry.

Bag, or backpack

The padded handles detach and become shoulder straps, so sixty litres travels on your back when the walk gets long. Carried that way, the TIZIP faces your spine, which puts the opening out of reach in a crowd. Joined together, the straps make a central handle for two-handed lifting.

What the 60 L adds over the 40 L

An internal compression strap, which the 40 L does not have. On a bag this size that matters more than it sounds: a half-packed 60 L rolls around and shifts weight on your back, and the strap pulls the load into one solid block. If you expect to travel with the bag part-full, this is the size to take.

Built to outlast the trip

The body is PD620, a PVC-coated polyester Ortlieb has used for decades. The base is PS620C, a reinforced Cordura made for being dragged over gravel, station floors and boat decks. A wire loop at the zip pull takes a padlock, not included.

Inside

  • One internal compression strap to adjust the volume
  • Two zipped interior pockets
  • One exterior mesh pocket with zip — outside the sealed volume, not waterproof
  • Two daisy chains along the top for lashing extra gear
  • Volume marked on the side of the bag
  • Wipe-clean interior

Waterproofing, precisely

IP67 means dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion, up to one metre for thirty minutes. The rating depends entirely on the TIZIP being closed to the end stop — a zip a centimetre short is an open bag. The zip wants its lubricant once or twice a year; we stock the Ortlieb stick (E134).

Frequently asked questions

40, 60 or 85 litres?
40 L is a week for one person and fits many airline cabin allowances. 60 L covers two people for a weekend or one for a long trip, and adds the internal compression strap. 85 L is for expedition loads and rarely leaves the hold. All three exist on wheels as the Duffle RG.

Will it pass as cabin luggage?
No. At 58 × 35 × 29 cm it is a hold bag. Take the 40 L if cabin travel matters.

What does IP67 actually mean?
Dust-tight, and protected against immersion in one metre of water for thirty minutes. That is a real step above the IP64 on our roll-top bags, which covers splashing only. It is not rated for prolonged submersion or diving.

Is the outer pocket waterproof?
No. The mesh pocket sits outside the sealed volume. Documents and electronics belong in the main compartment.

Is 60 litres comfortable on the back?
For a station transfer or a walk to a campsite, yes. It is a duffle with shoulder straps rather than a designed rucksack, so a fully loaded 60 L on a long hike will be less pleasant than a proper pack. Use the compression strap and it carries considerably better.

Can it be repaired?
Yes. Ortlieb supplies replacement straps, buckles and TIZIP lubricant, and the bag carries a five-year warranty. Our workshop at L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel handles repairs and orders parts.
