There is a specific kind of reluctance among commuters: the bag works, but it looks like expedition equipment parked next to a desk. The Back-Roller Plus Urban exists for exactly that objection. Structurally it is the Back-Roller Plus — same 20-litre main compartment, same 3-litre waterproof outer pocket, same Quick-Lock2.2 mounting. What changes is the surface.

The Urban is finished in a quieter textile-look Cordura, closer to a weekend bag than a dry bag. It sits on a rack in front of a glass office without announcing that you spent the weekend on a gravel track. The waterproofing is not reduced by a gram in exchange.

Which one should you buy

The Plus and the Plus Urban share their dimensions, volume, closure and mounting. Pick the Plus if the bag will see loaded touring and you want the colour range that goes with it — black, dark chili, denim, moss green. Pick the Plus Urban if the bag lives on a commute and you want the muted pepper finish. On weight there are forty grams between them, in the Plus's favour, which nobody has ever noticed on a rack.

Quick-Lock2.2

Upper hooks and lower sliding hook adjust tool-free across tube diameters from 8 to 16 mm, with no reducer inserts to lose. The lower rail carries scratch protection for your rack tube. Self-locking on the way down, one-handed on the way off.

Waterproofing, precisely

Rated IP64: dust-tight and protected against splashing water from all directions. The outer pocket is inside the waterproof envelope, closed by a roll-top rather than a zip — which is why it can hold a phone rather than only a spare tube. Roll both closures three to four times and tension them to reach the rating.

Frequently asked questions

Is this sold as a pair?
No, one bag with its shoulder strap. The body is symmetrical, so order two of the same reference if you want a matched set.

What exactly differs from the standard Back-Roller Plus?
The fabric finish and the colour, plus about forty grams. Volume, dimensions, closure, mounting and waterproofing rating are identical.

Will it fit my rack?
QL2.2 adjusts tool-free from 8 to 16 mm without reducer inserts, which covers almost every rear rack. For 18 or 20 mm tubes you will need the QL2.1 hook sets (E211 or E193), sold separately.

Will a laptop fit?
There is no dedicated padded sleeve. A 15-inch machine fits in the main compartment, but use a padded insert — Ortlieb's own Commuter Insert (F3906) is designed for this and we stock it.

What does IP64 mean in practice?
Dust-tight and protected against splashing water from every direction. Contents stay dry through heavy rain and road spray provided both roll closures are rolled three to four times and tensioned. It is not rated for submersion.

Can it be repaired?
Yes. Hooks, rails, buckles and straps are available individually and the bag carries a five-year warranty. Our workshop at L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel can fit replacement hardware for you.
