IP54 Waterproofing

The Ultimate Classic is rated IP54 — protected against dust ingress and against water splashes from all directions. In practical cycling terms: sustained riding in heavy rain, road spray from traffic and wet-weather storage will not affect the contents. The PVC-coated PD620 polyester is dense, durable and proven across decades of touring use. Note: IP54 differs from IP64 — it provides excellent splash protection in all conditions, but is not designed for full water jet exposure or submersion.

Map Case

The transparent top map case is one of the most useful features on any handlebar bag. It fits a folded 1:50,000 or 1:100,000 touring map, a modern smartphone up to approximately 17 cm (6.7 inches) or a compact GPS device. The case is sealed from the main compartment and provides independent weather protection for whatever is inside. Touch functionality works through the transparent film on most smartphones — no need to remove the phone to navigate or skip a track.

Organisation

The main compartment opens fully for easy packing and access. An integrated inner zip pocket keeps valuables, cards and small items organised and separate from the main load. A reflective element on the exterior adds low-light visibility. Note that the 6.5L is actually lighter than the 5L due to its construction differences.

What is the difference between IP54 and IP64?

Does touch functionality work through the map case film?

Yes — on most smartphones, touch functionality works through the transparent film of the map case without removing the phone. This allows navigation, music control and call answering while riding. Very thick cases or older touchscreens may require the phone to be removed.

Is the Ortlieb Ultimate Classic repairable?

Yes. All Ortlieb products are manufactured in Germany to exacting repairability standards.
