Chrome Citizen Messenger — the bag that started it all, rebuilt for today

Since 1995, the Citizen has been the messenger bag bike couriers trust to survive a working year on the street. Its seatbelt buckle, salvaged from junkyard cars in Chrome's early days, became the brand's signature and one of the most recognisable details in urban cycling.

In 2024, Chrome rebuilt the Citizen around the way people actually carry today. A padded laptop pocket now opens from the front, so your computer stays separate from everything else. The strap switches to either shoulder. And the famous buckle can be swapped for any compatible Chrome buckle, so the bag you carry can be entirely your own. Available in two sizes: the compact 15 L and the classic 24 L.

Weather resistance

The shell is 1050D recycled nylon, the same tough fabric Chrome has used for decades. Inside, a floating tarp liner made from recycled auto glass keeps your belongings dry through a rainy commute. The construction is weather resistant and PFAS-free. It is not a fully waterproof bag: in a sustained downpour, a roll-top such as the Chrome Barrage or Urban Ex will offer more protection.

Frequently asked questions

15L or 24L: which size should I choose?
The 15 L is ideal for a laptop up to 14 inches and your daily essentials; it replaces the Chrome Mini Metro in the range. The 24 L takes a 15-inch laptop, a change of clothes and lunch, and is the choice if you commute with more than the bare minimum.

Will my laptop fit?
Check your laptop against the pocket dimensions: 38 × 26.7 cm for the 24 L and 35.5 × 26 cm for the 15 L. If you are unsure, bring your laptop to L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel and we will try it in the bag with you.

Is the Citizen waterproof?
It is weather resistant. The nylon shell and the tarp liner keep your gear dry during an ordinary rainy commute, but the flap closure is not sealed. For guaranteed dry storage in heavy rain, choose a roll-top bag.

Can I really change the buckle?
Yes. The Citizen uses Chrome's 5 cm LG buckle system, so you can swap the standard buckle for any compatible Chrome buckle, sold separately.

Can it be repaired?
Chrome guarantees the bag for life against material and workmanship defects. For wear and tear, the heavy-duty construction makes repairs straightforward, and our team can advise you on the best route.
