Urban bike helmet guide

How to choose an urban bike helmet that you will actually wear

The best helmet is the one you put on every time you ride. For city cycling, that means a helmet that protects well, fits comfortably and looks good with what you wear, from a work outfit to a weekend jacket. Urban helmets combine certified protection with a cleaner, more timeless shape than sport helmets, and many add practical touches such as integrated lights, a visor or a way to lock the helmet to your bike.

Safety first: what to look for

  • EN 1078 certification: the European safety standard for bicycle helmets. Bicycle helmets sold in Europe must meet it, and the label is printed inside the helmet.
  • MIPS or a similar system: a low friction layer inside the helmet that lets it move slightly on impact, helping to reduce rotational forces on the head. Look for MIPS in the product name.
  • Visibility: light colours, reflective details or an integrated rear light make you easier to spot in traffic and at dusk.
  • Speed pedelecs: in the Netherlands, riders of speed pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) must wear a helmet certified for that use, such as NTA 8776. Standard bicycle helmets are not enough.

Finding the right size and fit

Measure the circumference of your head with a soft tape, about one centimetre above your eyebrows and around the widest part at the back. Compare the result with the size chart on the product page. If you are between two sizes, the smaller one with its adjustment system opened up usually gives a more secure fit.

  • The helmet should sit level, about two fingers above your eyebrows, not tilted back.
  • The side straps form a V just below each ear.
  • With the chin strap closed, you should fit no more than one or two fingers between strap and chin.
  • When you shake your head, the helmet should move with it, not on its own.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which helmet size to choose?

Measure your head circumference about one centimetre above the eyebrows and compare it with the size chart on the product page. Most helmets also have a rear adjustment dial for a precise fit.

Is a helmet compulsory in the Netherlands?

Not on a regular bicycle or e-bike assisted up to 25 km/h. It is compulsory on a speed pedelec, with a helmet approved for that use. Wearing a helmet is still strongly recommended for every rider.

When should I replace my helmet?

Always after a crash or a hard impact, even if you see no damage, because the protective foam may be compressed inside. Also replace it when the shell, foam or straps show clear wear.

What is MIPS and do I need it?

MIPS is a thin layer inside the helmet that allows a small movement on impact, designed to reduce rotational forces on the head. It is not mandatory, but it is a welcome extra for daily riders.

Can I try helmets before buying?

Yes. A selection of urban and children's helmets is available to try at L'Hirondelle Bike Shop in Meppel, where our team can help you find the right size and fit.
