To equip your bike with gears, you will of course make a cassette, that is to say the group of sprockets which is on the rear hub.
Depending on the bike, a cassette can have 5 to 12 speeds, but the vast majority of modern bikes are equipped with 9, 10 or 11 speeds.
The two types of cassettes
When the sprockets are integral with the freewheel body, we speak of “ freewheel ”. This standard is no longer valid but can still be found on old bikes.
When the sprockets are independent, we speak of a cassette . This is the current standard.
To find your way around when buying, the toothing of the cassettes is designated by its extremes. A 14/28 cassette means that the smallest sprocket has 14 teeth and the largest 28. The higher this number, the more teeth the sprocket has and the easier it is to pedal uphill (we grind!)
Please note that it is not possible to combine a 9-speed cassette with a transmission designed for 10 speeds. Campagnolo drivetrains are only compatible with cassettes of the same brand.
It is recommended to change your chain if you change your cassette because of wear.
To change your cassette, take a chain whip and an adjustable wrench.
